The Rules of Roulette
In order to play roulette, you must place a bet on a specific number or series of numbers, and then watch as the ball spins on the wheel. There are several different ways to bet, including inside and outside bets.
The Inside Bets
A variety of different bets can be made, all of which are based on the positional grouping of pockets that the ball will land in. These include bets on a single number, various groupings of pockets, odd or even, red or black, and whether the number is high (19-36) or low (1-18).
The Outside Bets
One way to increase your odds of winning is by betting on the color. In roulette, the color red means you’ll win a higher payout than if you bet on black. The payout is 50% on a black bet and 25% on a red bet.
The Line Bet/Six Number Bet/Sixline Bet: Also known as the sixain in French, this is the best type of bet for novices to the game. This bet involves placing a chip on the edge of the horizontal line between two adjacent rows.
There are many variations of this bet, but the most common is called a street bet and pays 5-1.
The Dozens Bet: This bet is a bit of a oxymoron, but it does have a big payoff if your number is among the first 12 numbers on the layout.
A similar bet, but in reverse, is the split bet. This is a more conservative option and offers a slightly lower payout, but is still impressive for a beginner.
The earliest mention of the game of roulette was in a document published in New France in 1758, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that it gained widespread popularity. The game was derived from several previous games, including Roly Poly and the Italian game Biribi.
