The Game of Domino

domino

Domino is a family of tile-based games. The tiles are rectangular, with two square ends, each marked with a number of spots. The object is to place as many tiles on the other end of the game board as possible without having the same number of spots on both ends. A player begins by setting a single domino on each of the square ends. After setting the first domino, the player then begins to stack the remaining dominos on top of the first one.

Game

The Game of Domino is a popular family of tile-based games. The rectangular tiles have two square ends. The ends have a spot for each number, or domino. A player attempts to place the tiles in sequence in order to win the game. A player must match at least four dominoes from the same color to win. If all their tiles are identical, they are called “nobles.”

Rules

The Rules of Domino vary from game to game. However, the basic objective of the game is to collect as many doubles as possible. To play a double, it must be joined by another double. A double formed by the first and fourth tiles must be joined by another double. Otherwise, the player will start from the beginning. This strategy is known as the “sniff”.

Variations

Various variations of domino include varying line of play rules. Usually, players begin the game with a single tile in the center of the playing surface and play dominoes in pairs of matching numbers. In other variants, doubles are allowed to form lines, but may be forced onto a player’s hand to block the line. Some variants allow doubles to form lines in either direction. Ultimately, the goal is to build an empty hand.

Materials

During the early 19th century, craftsmen made dominoes out of animal bones affixed to thin ebony pieces. These dominoes had one side painted white and the other black. Over time, these craftsmen shifted to using more sustainable materials, like vegetable ivory. Tagua nut, a native of an isthmus connecting Central and South America, is a hard, close-grained wood that is nearly as opaque as ivory.

Origins

The Origins of Domino comic book series is based on a superhuman called Domino. She was conceived as a byproduct of an early eighteenth century government project. The scientists hoped to create super soldiers by genetically altering embryos. After several years of testing, they realized that their creation was unsuitable and left her at a Chicago priest’s home. She grew into an extraordinary hero and has a worldwide fan base.
